Study questions in the book and your quizzes

-You should know:

  • Key people:
    • George Washington: fought during the French and Indian War; did not agree with General Braddock’s strategy of fighting
    • Governor Andros: treated the colonists poorly; took away the colonists voice in the decisions made in the colonies
    • King James II: wanted complete CONTROL and authority over the colonists; overthrown by the English citizens and replaced by Mary and William of Orange (part of the Glorious Revolution)
    • Mary and William of ORANGE: replaced King James; signed the English Bill of Rights
    • John Locke: believed in natural rights: life, liberty, PROPERTY
    • Ben Franklin: proposed the Albany Plan of Union
  • Key groups:
    • Council: elected by the colonists; made laws
    • Colonial Assembly: appointed by the Royal governor; highest court
    • Parliament and the 2 houses: England’s law makers; House of Commons and House of Lords
    • Iroquois tribe: allies with the British
    • Huron/Algonquin tribes: allies with the French
  • Key laws, agreements and proposals:
    • Magna Carta: limited power of the king; right to trial by jury
    • English Bill of Rights: free elections; taxes needed approval by Parliament
    • Albany Plan of Union: Ben Franklin proposed this to unite the colonies to work together
  • Events:
    • Glorious Revolution: British (not colonists) overthrew King James for his misuse of power—because of this the colonists overthrew Governor Andros; Mary and William of Orange took the throne and signed the English Bill of Rights
    • The French and Indian War: fought between the French and the British over land (land=power and wealth); this was a part of the 7 years’ war; Result: Britain gained France’s territory including Canada
    • events leading to the French and Indian War (think alliances made and the motives for land and fur): French allied with the Huron/Algonquin tribes and British allied with the Iroquois tribe; the three tribes wanted to trade fur in exchange for goods with the colonists leading to disputes and battles among the tribes; Britain and England wanted more land to have more power
  • Life in Colonial America:
    • Schooling: multiple grade levels; taught reading to read the Bible; writing and arithmetic were only taught to the wealthy children
    • the Great Awakening: focused on the inner emotion as more important than following the motions of religion
    • the Enlightenment: focused on reason and science to find knowledge
